Demeter’s Barkskinned Toad is an innately defensive companion who creates an overall greater energetic health in any environment they reside in. They serve as a detoxing companion that expels negative and nauseating energy from the self and one’s space. They also have a unique ability that allows them to gift the auras of other beings in their proximity with a layer of bark-like shielding, preventing many forms of attachments and reducing the build up of negativity. This ability is improved with a gift of bark as an offering, or if bark is used as part of your usual practice. The Barkskinned Toads have a natural alignment to Earth, Wood, and Green energies, so keep this in mind if these are something you work well with, are wanting a deeper connection to, or are in sore need of for greater balance.
As you might imagine, the Barkskinned Toads have relaxed personalities. They are never in any rush but they are always mindful of the environment around themselves. Oftentimes, their personalities do not stand out. They are simply a calm energetic influence with their presence encouraging groundedness and concentration. While quiet, they are not nonsocial. Barkskinned Toads like to cling to walls and trees, so you’ll often find them perched vertically upon a surface, but they will also climb up on their human and cling to their back or perch upon their shoulder. They enjoy their human’s energy and like the warmth. When not on their human, or taken off and placed elsewhere, they’ll position themselves on a vertical surface near their human or will occasionally be found bathing in the sun.
That said, Companions do like interacting with Barkskinned Toads and might treat them like a cherished pet. The toads do not mind the attention. Barkskinned Toads are earth toned in color, normally in the area of dull browns and patterned grays, sometimes with subtly veining of leafy green. They blend in quite well and are able to camouflage adeptly if they are clinging to a surface that is not a tree, changing their colors to blend in. This ability might be why one of my companions donned my own toad in brightly colored outfits, including a bright red cowboy hat, to see what colors he’ll take on. Barkskinned Toads are Gray Arts.
