The Sword of Defense and Retaliation is best thought of as a spell that takes the form of a bronze sword on fire. It is a protective tool that strikes at the heart of any incoming threats. Essentially, if something is trying to attack you, the Sword of Defense and Retaliation will strike back on your behalf. It will drive away spirits holding ill-intent and will also slice malicious magicks and energies in half, reducing (if not completely cancelling out) the affect they will have on you.
The sword can be left on at all times, or switched on and off, where it will stay just outside your aura. This can be done by merely extending your desires to the sword and it will respond in kind. Verbal commands also work. There are no specific code words. It is as easy as thinking of the Sword and thinking Protect me/Stop protecting me.
The sword has no thoughts of its own and should be thought of as an extension of yourself more than anything else. It can also defend a specific area or another person, if that is what you want.
The sword will not attack anything unless it holds ill will towards you. It will not attack people. It will only target spirits, energy, or magick. That is all.
As this sword was created from Ares' power, it contains powerful ties to the element of War. This is something that you can connect to through the sword, and have it give you things like strength, courage, and even endurance and stamina. You may ask the sword to gift you these qualities.
I've also been asked if it's possible for the Sword to both be programmed to do certain things and if it's shape can be changed through this programming. The Sword has a wonderful potential to be programmed. In addition to its normal power, you can have it act in whatever way you'd like. This includes summoning your own protective spirits when danger is present or even having it to shoot thunderbolts. However, this is dependent on your ability to work with it and program it. You can't have it summon your protective spirits if you don't know how, nor can you have it shoot a thunderbolt if you have no idea how to work with thunderbolt energy. It does not gain the skills you want it to have without you working it out yourself. In this sense, it's better thought of working with it like a servitor, but the sword will iron out the flaws and will help you reach your intended goal. As for changing form, this is also possible, but this requires you working with the element of War within it, and like it being programmed, is only as limited as you are. I'll say for some this might be incredibly difficult, and for others, it'd be very easy. I would consider this an advanced goal in working with your Sword. It is meant to be a sword, so that might be hard to change, but it's up to you if you want to try.
Owning this tool means you can gain a stronger connection to Ares, if you want to pursue that path. Worship of and/or bonding with Ares is not a necessity.
